Cardiff's Animation HistoryA few years before Walt Disney debuted Mickey Mouse, Cardiff had its own animated mascot: an adventurous and untamed dog named Jerry.
Jerry the Troublesome Tyke was created in 1925 by Sid Griffiths, a cinema projectionist at the time. With his two-dimensional dog and a camera, Sid fused live action with animation. It was a technique used by Disney and Max Fleischer of Inkwell Studios around the same time. Inkwell Studios would later create Betty Boop and Popeye. At that time, their series “Out of the Inkwell,” which bears a striking resemblance to Sid’s creation, may well have been a significant influence on Sid. Sid and his friend are the only two known artists to use the technique in Cardiff, and Jerry the Troublesome Tyke is praised as being the first animated series made in Wales. Sid continued to animate and in 1954 worked on the feature animation: Animal Farm. While Jerry is seen as a relic of Welsh animation history, the series didn’t initially spark a movement on a grand scale. Between the 1920s and 1980s there was something of an animation dry spell in Cardiff and Wales. Get the whole story here. |

Restoring the environment, one bug at a time.9 March 2017: The sun is shining for maybe the first time in months. Outside the Bute Building in Cardiff, a group of volunteers in their wellies stand with rakes and shovels at the ready around a few boxes of flowers and an even patch of dirt.
They are Bute Bees and they are here to help insects, namely pollinators, by providing habitats and plants they need to survive. The grass that used to carpet the rectangles they’ve unearthed couldn’t provide that... Get the whole story here. |
The Gentle Good, Cardiff-based Welsh folk band launches latest album18 November 2016: On Armistice Day, Cardiff-based Welsh folk band, The Gentle Good, launched their latest album, Ruins/Adfeilion, in a church in Canton with standing room only in the audience. The album speaks, bilingually, to a moral conviction in the face of the uncertain times we are in.
Bonello commanded the stage accompanied by a full orchestra: Welsh harp, string quartet, stand-up bass, horns, and vocal harmonies. He performed on guitar, harmonium, and piano. The high ceilings and pillar-lined aisles created a sound environment that accentuated the warmth & soulfulness of the music, holding onto each note of the music comprised of Welsh and English lyrics. Would you welcome a refugee into your home?28 October 2016: This week the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp has been officially pronounced empty after months of controversy. The resistance by UK and French governments to assist the refugees and migrants in the camp has been condemned by Amnesty International in a formal statement. The dismantling, facilitated by French police and bulldozers, became more chaotic when a fire took hold in the camp.
Now, 300 child refugees from the camp are being registered and processed into the UK. Get the whole story here. |
